Several U.S. Agency for International Development staffers cleared out their offices at the agency’s Washington headquarters on Thursday, saying they were disheartened after Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency laid them off or placed them on leave.

Reflections from a Departed USAID Employee

I write this not as a bitter farewell but as a reflection on my recent departure from USAID. After years of dedication and service, I find myself removed from my position, left to reconcile my experiences within an organization I once held in the highest regard.

My time at USAID was marked by a deep commitment to the agency’s mission of advancing global development and humanitarian assistance. I poured my energy into projects designed to uplift communities, provide relief, and promote sustainable progress. But beneath the noble goals lay a troubling reality—a system burdened by internal politics, and questionable decision-making.

The dedication of my colleagues was often overshadowed by leadership that valued optics over outcomes. Priorities shifted with the political winds, and decisions were made to satisfy short-term agendas rather than deliver lasting impact. Innovation was stifled, and constructive criticism was met with indifference or hostility.

I witnessed talented professionals sidelined, and critical programs deleted, all in the name of maintaining efficiency.

I do not write these words to discredit the many hardworking individuals still fighting the good fight within USAID. Their dedication deserves recognition. I might contribute to a broader conversation about the need for meaningful reform.

It is not too late for USAID to reclaim its founding principles and truly become the beacon of humanitarian progress it aspires to be. But that will require courage—from leadership, to stand up to reckless budget slashing.

For now, I step away, proud of the work I accomplished despite the obstacles, yet deeply disheartened by the circumstances that led to my departure. I remain hopeful that those who follow can bring about the change so desperately needed.
